Jaw crushers are the workhorse of primary crushing - they take run-of-mine or quarry feed and reduce it to a size your secondary crusher can handle. Choosing the right jaw crusher model comes down to feed size, required throughput, material hardness and the final product size you need from your primary stage.
The jaw crusher feed opening (for example PE-250x400 up to PE-1500x1800) must be larger than your maximum feed stone. As a rule, the largest stone should be about 80% of the feed opening width. If your quarry delivers 600 mm rock, start from a PE-750x1060 or larger; feeding oversized rock into a small crusher jams the chamber and damages the jaw plates.
Capacity is normally quoted in tons per hour at a set discharge setting. PE series covers roughly 5 to 1000 t/h depending on model. Add a 10-20% safety margin for hard rock, moisture and scalping efficiency. Tell your supplier the target plant capacity, not just the crusher - the feeder, screen and downstream crusher must all be matched.
Jaw crushers crush by compression and handle the hardest rock - granite, basalt, quartzite and iron ore up to 320 MPa compressive strength. For abrasive rock choose Mn18 jaw plates and a robust frame; for softer limestone, standard Mn13 plates give lower cost per ton. High clay or sticky feed may need a grizzly feeder ahead of the jaw.
The closed-side setting controls top product size from the primary. A tighter setting gives finer output but lowers capacity. Most plants run the jaw open (100-200 mm) and let the cone or impactor shape the product. If you need cubical final aggregate, use the jaw only as a primary and finish with a cone or VSI stage.
PE/PEX and C series jaw crushers are available as stationary units or mounted with feeder and screen on a skid or portable plant. For contractors moving between sites, a mobile jaw crushing plant reduces setup time; for permanent quarries, a fixed line is cheaper per ton.
When comparing suppliers, verify the motor power, weight, manganese grade of jaw plates, availability of spare parts (jaw plates, toggle plates, bearings, cheeks) and export experience to your region. Ask for a technical drawing, a reference plant list and a factory test video before ordering.
PE-750x1060 accepts feed up to about 630 mm and produces roughly 80-180 t/h at a 75-200 mm closed-side setting, depending on material hardness.
Use a jaw crusher for hard, abrasive rock. Impact crushers suit softer, less abrasive material and give better shaping but higher wear cost on hard rock.
Liner life depends on feed abrasiveness and settings; in hard granite, Mn13-Mn18 jaw plates commonly last 3-8 months in a primary application. Keep a spare set to avoid downtime.
